Linux vs. Windows
Penguin Web Hosting employs Linux Hosting as opposed to Windows hosting for various reasons. The two most important reasons are their superior performance and heightened security. Linux servers are much more stable than Windows’ servers. Proof of this is evident in the fact that our servers are usually up for over 100 days before a reboot is necessary. Generally, reboots are only needed after kernel updates and downtime is very short. There are special utilities available that can be used to load and execute the new kernel without needing to reboot. Thus, the server can potentially stay up for years without a reboot.
Linux servers are far more resistant to viruses, which make our servers much more secure for your website. It has been said that as Linux becomes more widely used, it will start seeing more viruses. In article written in 2003 by Scott Granneman entitled Linux v. Windows Viruses, Granneman quoted Dr. Nic Peeling and Dr. Julian Satchell’s research. The research stated that of the over 60,000 Windows viruses out there, hundreds have caused widespread damage, whereas the 40 or so viruses concerned with Linux have never caused any widespread damage. In fact, most of the damage caused was confined to the laboratory.
Given these important statistics, it is clear that Linux is much less vulnerable to attack than Windows. At Penguin Web Hosting, we strive to provide our clients with the best servers available. By using Linux Hosting exclusively, we feel that our clients can rest assured knowing they can expect exceptional performance and safety unmatched by any other server to date.
